The main benefit to consortia is that not only can DXS update content very quickly and link all forms/pathways etc to READ codes, it is sat within the user's workflow.
If someone needs to check a care pathway whilst with a patient, one click on DXS will take them to the very latest advice, form, guideline and pathway.
The PDP tool is currently in development, being enhanced with lots of new functionality based on user requests. This will include such things as a time and points tally (each user is meant to allocate how much time they spent on some research and assign points too - they have to get to 50points). Also, it will allow them to create folders and sub folders to help organise their entries. Plus, the ability for someone (probably a Practice Manager) to globally add entries to selected users - very useful as more PDP related things are being done on a 'group' or practice level so documents or papers need to be added across multiple users.

Any other suggestions or tips of how to improve the tool would be useful and now is the time.

We aim to release the new PDP early October.

David got asked a number of questions during a recent training session, so thought i would share with everyone:

1. Is DXS in TPP SystmOne? - no. We would like it to be but we don't get much back from TPP when we try to talk to them about integrating. As such, anyone moving to TPP will lose DXS and their PDP log (they can print or export it out before moving).

2. SPCs - can SPCs be available for the generic drugs in DXS? No. SPCs only exist for branded drugs - they do not exist for generics. An SPC gets created by the pharma company when it produces a drug (a brand). This is a legal requirement, hence the document gets created. It would be wrong and incorrect to link an SPC to a generic as they are specific to one brand.

3. Can we include images of inhalers? It has long been asked that we include images of inhalers, but also pills. It would really help doctors (and patients) identify their inhaler or tablet - rather than just "its pink and round". Problem we have is sourcing it (not readily available from one supplier) plus cost. We were once told we could have all tablet images for £100,000 - ridiculous.

Going around training and demonstrating DXS to Vision users, I haven't had any negative feedback to date.
Consequently, it's quite clear that every single Vision site will eventually want DXS activated for use as they can all see the benefits immediately.

Unfortunately it takes some time for the VES sites to get activated so that it maybe used.
Yet with a LAN site it is instant, because it can be setup and installed remotely.

Therefore why isn't it installed on the VES across every site, leaving it to the user to simply put a tick in the staff user tickbox, for those that wish to use it. That way the VES team do not need to schedule in a job and the software would be instantly ready for use directly after the training.

It seems crazy training the software to users who may not see it again for a few weeks.

Has anybody approached INPS about this?

A lot of you guys will be coming across VES sites at the moment and finding that the users cannot access the PDP or STATISTICS options (plugins, we call them). When clicking on the button it returns a message along the lines of:

the selected plugin requires the user to be registered before it can be used, please check registration details and perform update if necessary

Basically this means that the practice and/or the users do not have a unique registration key associated within the DXS database. This is something that we generate when we first setup a practice and it allows us to know that the practice exists, has DXS and can update content. At a practice with their own server this is easy as we can gain access and make sure it is setup correctly and all registration keys are generated.

On a VES site, we have no access and little control over what is setup and how. Historically, the VES support guys setup practices to have the DXS software but do not 'finish off' and follow the process to create these registration keys. Unfortunately, it is manual process and it does need someone to click a button to kick the registration process into life.

The only thing we can do is make a note of the practice where registration keys are required and send them to me. I then try to liase with the VES support guys to get the process done.

Currently most VES sites are running DXS v4.1. The VES is made up of about 30 terminal servers, most of which got v4.1 applied last year - some (probably 3 or 4) never got upgraded for some reason, which is why you might see the odd site still running v4.0 or below. The plugins (PDP and STATS) are the same situation, most should have the latest versions, some do not.

The VES guys have v4.2 (have since the release last month) but version upgrades have to go through sign off and testing before they apply it. Even once it is signed off they have to schedule in the actual upgrade, which has to be a weekend. This is why it often takes months to upgrade on the VES.

What should happen is that they test & sign off then a login script (to all terminal servers) applies the new version one weekend.

Going forward, DXS are already developing v4.3. For us this is an interim build which is very much with VES in mind (although it will roll to all LAN sites too). It concentrates on archiving of data and table structure which will fit into the VES environment. Basically, it will help performance especially going forward as more sites move to VES. This is due for release in 2-3 months time (but again there will be a delay before the VES team apply it).

DXS has ADMIN rights / permissions within a user's profile. This enables a practice to control who can view, add & delete certain content within DXS. A user can be applied as an Administrator to enable them to carry out such things as:

1. Add / Edit Practice Content - only a user with Admin rights can add, delete or amend content that is added to the new Practice Content area. All other users can only view the practice content.

2. Customise Patient Leaflets for the practice - an Admin user can customise any patient leaflet and make it available to all DXS users in the practice (ie the Practice option is available to them). All others users can only customise leaflets for themselves (ie only the Personal option is available to them).

3. View all Statistics - in the Statistics tool, only users with Admin rights can view ALL or individual user's statistics. Users without the Admin permissions only see their own statistics

By default, when a practice first gets setup with DXS the software looks at the 'user role' from the clinical system. Anyone enabled as a 'senior partner', 'practice manager', 'computer manager' or similar will get Admin rights. However, any user can be applied Admin rights after installation.

Currently, there is no tick-box or option within the DXS software to give a specific user Admin rights. It is enabled within the DXS database and the option can only be found in the DXS support tool (DXS.exe). If a practice wants settings changed it is best to contact DXS support who will then go through the list of users and apply to the relevant person.

New in DXS v4.2

The main new features found in v4.2 are:

1. Practice Content - Allows users to incorporate their own material into the Patient Education and Professional sections of DXS. This is not yet available in the Services section, which is something I have been asked recently.

2. Search for Illustrations - until v4.2 users had to search for a leaflet title and then hope that an illustration existed. This search now means users can look directly for an illustration and be taken straight to it (rather than the leaflet text).

3. What's New in DXS - although this has been present on the HOME screen for about a year, the user can now alter the time-range to determine how much information is displayed here - per individual.

4. Diagnosis Button - enhancements to the Diagnosis button mean quick searching and the copy option.

For a more detailed overview - which is practice friendly too - see attached PDF file with this post.
